Today I finished a job I've been looking forward to: a large feature wall in a living room in Nantgaredig, near Carmarthen. The customer wanted something with real character behind the TV, and we settled on Vymura Luxury Vinyl Wallcovering in a grey and charcoal distressed stone effect (pattern M 95641).

The before

The wall was a long, plain grey wall with the TV bracket already fixed and cables and sockets in place. Nothing wrong with it, but in a room this size it didn't really give the eye anywhere to land.

Before: plain grey living-room wall with empty TV bracket, pasting table and dust sheets set up for wallpapering

Preparation first

Good wallpapering is mostly preparation. I protected the floor and furniture with dust sheets, filled and sanded any small marks, and made sure the surface was clean, sound and evenly sized so the paper would grip properly and slide into position. The TV came off the bracket, and the socket faceplates were loosened so the paper could be tucked neatly behind them rather than cut around the outside.

Hanging the vinyl

Vymura is a heavy, hard-wearing vinyl, so it needs the right adhesive and a bit of patience. I checked the batch numbers on every roll, plumbed a true vertical line to start from, and worked out the drops so the joins wouldn't land awkwardly around the TV. A stone effect looks random, but it still has a repeat, and if the match is out by even a few millimetres you notice it straight away.

The fiddly parts were the TV bracket, the sockets and the reveal around the tall window at the end of the wall. Each cut was marked in place and trimmed with a fresh blade so the pattern carries on without a break and the edges sit tight.

Why a feature wall works

One feature wall gives a room a focal point without overwhelming it. A darker, textured paper like this adds depth and makes the TV wall look intentional rather than just somewhere to hang a screen. Vinyl is also wipeable and tough, which makes it ideal for a busy family living room.

With the TV back up, the finished wall looks smart, warm and modern.
